Poetry by Marcella Benton

yesterday my see saw heart broke to medusa stone
and I shot myself in the foot to ease the pain

now I’m dying in the dirt with my boots on

worming my way up the coast
to gain an hour
or twenty years

to erase this pistol state

no one comes to florida
they know we’re playing russian roulette with the ocean

if I make tomorrow
I’ll set my sights on that panhandle
strike from the pot to the fire

and aim for mister time
the worst lover of them all
